  • Ever dream of seeing the aurora borealis, testing your mettle in long Arctic nights, or simply setting out for new experiences in a place few have experienced? A job over the winter in Alaska is a fantastic way to do all three. You might be surprised to find that, because of their proximity to the coast, many Alaska cities enjoy fairly moderate winter temperatures. For example, Juneau’s average high during the winter is about 32 degrees. And while fishing jobs abound, they’re not for everyone. Here are five jobs to look for if you want to get the feel for an Alaska winter without the danger and cold of working on a fishing boat.

  • Waitstaff

Waitstaff jobs at places like the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel let you experience winter life in Alaska without committing to the harsh elements. Banquet waitstaff employees help set up banquet rooms and serve food and drinks, and regular waitstaff employees actually wait tables. If food service is your gig, what more interesting place to take your skills than up near the Arctic Circle?

  • Shop Foreman

Got mechanic experience? Transportation and guest services departments in both Skagway and Juneau need shop foremen to oversee maintenance operations and shop staff. Both locations have relatively mild winter temperatures, since they’re coastal towns.

  • Prep Cook

If you’ve got kitchen chops, you can put them to work in Alaska, just like anywhere else. Hotels across the state need prep cooks for restaurant, lounge, coffee shop, and catering businesses. If you like to ride the rails, you might even be able to find a gig on an Alaska tour train.

  • Housekeeping and janitorial

If you’re looking for an entry-level position, check out janitorial opportunities. If you have a bit of housekeeping experience, higher-level positions also open up. One example: Housekeeping supervisor at the Westmark Anchorage Hotel, where you would assist the housekeeping manager with supervising staff and operations. If Fairbanks, 360 miles to the north, seems like a more interesting place to call home for the winter, check out room attendant positions at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel.

  • Clerk

When visitors come to Alaska, they’re usually expecting something special. Helping to make their stays comfortable and memorable can be super rewarding. If you have experience with customer service and sales, a clerk position in a hotel might be the perfect way to put your skills to work and let you experience a season in Alaska. You’d be processing reservations and assisting guests in your choice of cities in the spectacular state of Alaska.

Whether you’re skilled in a certain area or just looking for an entry-level job, lots of options open up each season in Alaska. Spending a winter up north is a special experience, and no matter what type of work you do, it’s sure to be a memorable time. Look for these and other current job openings on Alaska Tour Jobs.
