THE ALASKA EXPERIENCE:

Katie – Passenger Services Representative

I moved to Juneau, Alaska in January of 2006 and was desperate for a job. At the SOA Juneau Job Services, they handed me a flyer for AlaskaTourJobs, and I thought it was too good to be true. I grew up in Wyoming and didn’t know much about the cruise industry. I decided it was worth a shot and applied for a position on the website atj.portent.com / Juneau Division. I spoke with the Manager of Passenger Services and got a job as a Passenger Services Representative.

  • As a “Dock Rep”, I greeted tourists when they came off of the ships in the mornings, answered many questions about Juneau, and loaded them onto the buses for their tours. I was surprised how many different people were on the cruise ships. I learned something new every day, and I was always excited to go to work the next day. The employees at Princess and Holland America are so kind. They are all very willing to help and just great to be around.
I definitely took advantage of the benefits of working for the company. We were able to go on many different tours around Juneau, as long as there were empty seats. From whale-watching to zip-lines, float trips, and gold-panning, my family and I definitely enjoyed it. Along with the tours, there are many other things to do in Juneau, Alaska. The Mendenhall Glacier is a beautiful site and has many trails around it. People kayak, canoe, and even swim in the Mendenhall Lake in the summer. There are many hiking and biking trails around Juneau. I feel very privileged to be able to work for the company again this summer. I’ve learned a lot and have gained valuable work experience as well.
